NUTRITION FUNDAMENTALS II
HOW DOES CALCIUM SUPPORT HEALTH ?
Calcium is essential for various body functions beyond just building bone. Calcium is vital for muscle contraction, especially the heart which never stops! Nerve conduction, moving messages across the nerves, moving nutrients into and out of your cells as well for clotting blood, are all the responsibility of calcium.
HOW DO YOU SELECT A QUALITY CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT ?
First of all evaluate the source of the calcium. The three most common are calcium carbonate, calcium citrate and calcium lactate. One major downfall of calcium carbonate is that it is not easily digested as it is usually from rocks or sea shells. This makes for very poor utilization and assimilation by the body.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DIGESTED ROCKS?
So then, which forms of calcium are easy to digest and use by the body…. Calcium lactate and calcium citrate are the best sources of usable calcium.
There are other factors that affect the absorption and use of calcium in the body. First, you must have a good source of fat for absorption, so low fat and non-fat milk and yogurt are not the best choices. Secondly, you must have a supplement that which can be digested and absorbed in an acidic stomach environment. Most of us do not have favorable digestive systems for adequate absorption of calcium. That is when the use of a supplement such as calcium lactate should be used. Calcium lactate is a highly soluble calcium salt that needs very little stomach acid to convert it to the usable form of calcium.
By the way, Tums are calcium carbonate.
You may be wondering…
Where does magnesium fit into the equation? Magnesium is required for the transport of usable calcium into the body’s cells.
HOW MUCH CALCIUM DO YOU NEED?
That’s a tricky question. Calcium is measured in the blood, hair and Nutrition Response Testing. Blood calcium measurements are unreliable as they don’t tell about absorption into the bones, tissues and organs. The most reliable measurements would be the Hair Mineral Test, followed by the Nutrition Response Test. Get tested today to get the exact type and dosage of calcium for your needs.
There is much more to the calcium story. Please inquire at the office for more information about calcium and the best supplements to help increase bone, nerve, joint and muscle health.
