Digestive Health 101

Food is the energy source for the human body. The process of breaking down food and converting it into a form that can be absorbed by the body’s tissues is called digestion. The human digestive system includes a group of organs that uses mechanical and chemical actions to change food into nutrients-carbohydrates, fats and proteins-the soluble products needed for the human body to function. 

 

To ensure your body properly digests and absorbs the needed nutrients found in the foods we eat, one must keep the digestive system healthy and clean. By following a well- balanced diet, eating small meals regularly, reducing the amount of refined fats and refined sugars, and drinking plenty of water between meals, one can help keep their digestive system on track.

Remember good food is medicine for the body, it contains the building blocks that are necessary for body repair and energy.

There are several whole food supplements that can help to maintain and support the digestive system. Whole Food Digestive enzymes can help to encourage the breakdown and absorption of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.  These enzymes work to enhance the function of different portions of the digestive system. For instance you may need more help in the upper portion-stomach, gallbladder and liver. You may also have had surgery to remove a diseased gallbladder. In this case you most likely cannot digest fats which can lead to other health problems. In the lower digestive system you may lack fiber and normal bacteria to aid in absorption of important nutrients. Ask the doctors about digestive support that may help you get the most of your food.
